Sderot Community Center

Meir Panim supports the unique needs of Sderot’s struggling community members. Participants such as at-risk teens and isolated senior citizens can thrive in a supportive environment structured to help them process their trauma and move forward.

Our Solution

Housed in a bomb-proof facility, the Sderot Community Center provides a safe, social, and therapeutic environment for participants to come together and enrich their lives.  For our senior citizens, the center’s safety measures provide them the peace of mind to leave their homes. They can socialize, work on fine motor skills through woodworking and nourish their well-being with the help of the supportive staff. For our teens, we focus on overcoming past trauma and personal challenges through art therapy, with an emphasis on goal-setting and skill-building. With the help of professional staff, the center serves as a prevention strategy to keep at-risk youth on track for a brighter future.

How We Are Making a Difference

In Sderot, a city where an overwhelming percentage of residents grapple with PTSD, the Community Center serves as a vital refuge for at-risk and impoverished individuals seeking support. Recognizing that traditional therapy is not always accessible or comfortable for everyone, the center offers alternative therapeutic approaches that encourage healing in a more natural and engaging way.

One such approach is art therapy, with woodworking emerging as a particularly effective medium. Through the process of crafting and building together, participants find a safe space to express themselves, fostering trust and meaningful connections. The hands-on nature of woodworking allows individuals to process their traumas in a nonverbal yet deeply impactful manner, breaking down emotional barriers and alleviating the pervasive sense of isolation that trauma often brings. By transforming raw materials into something tangible and purposeful, they simultaneously rebuild their own sense of stability, confidence, and resilience.

“I was having trouble getting through to my son. His mentor at the Center really helped him grow. He’s doing so well in school now! I am so proud!”

David, father

“The Center is a second home for me. It gives me something to look forward to and the new friends that I made there have really lifted my spirits.”
