Meir Panim Update
New Israeli Government Survey Shows 1 in 7 Israelis Are Now Skipping Meals
June 16, 2020

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, Meir Panim has had to work twice as hard to ensure that no one in Israel goes hungry. All around the world economies have been hit and many people are struggling to make ends meet. This has been especially true in Israel, with over a million Israelis unemployed in April, and an unprecedented unemployment rate of 27.6%!

A recent government survey shed some light on how the public has been affected by COVID-19 and the new adjustments people are making in their lives. According to the survey, 44.6% of all Israeli’s are saying that they can’t pay for basic necessities, such as rent, and are worse off financially than they were before the pandemic. In addition to that, 14.1% are now living in fear that they may lose their homes and are now cutting back on the amount of food they consume!

Given these new statistics, now more than ever, Meir Panim needs to continue distributing thousands of meals daily to the hungry. It has not been easy – coronavirus restrictions have been a real challenge as the Restaurant-Style Soup Kitchens had been shut down, and surplus food donations from hotels and event halls were reduced to zero. Even so, Meir Panim rose to the occasion, by catering all meals and delivering thousands of Meals-on-Wheels throughout the country.

If you are interested in joining the effort to ensure no Israeli goes hungry, there is no better time than now! All donations to Meir Panim will be matched dollar-for-dollar until June 30th!
